OSA's Alcohol Protocols

Over the last several years, the laws affecting the service of alcohol have evolved to the point where hosts can be liable for the actions of guests who consume alcohol on the premises of the host. Banquets, tournaments and other events where alcohol service is provided, and are hosted or sanctioned by OSA and/or its members, require reasonable efforts to reduce the risk of guests over-consuming. In addition, certain precautions are recommended to intervene when it is apparent that someone has had too much to drink.

In an effort to help minimize liability associated with the service of alcohol, OSA has prepared a set of protocols. These are based on current industry standards and have been modified in consideration of our specific events and functions. While it is impossible to eliminate this risk, following the recommended protocols will help demonstrate reasonable care and due diligence. By showing you took practical steps in this regard will help minimize the consequences in the event there is a civil action due to an incident involving an alcohol related incident involving a guest. It should be noted that an incident does not necessarily have to involve the operation of a motor vehicle, it could be any damage to a person, including the guest, where the guest was deemed to be impaired. Please see guidelines below.
