OSA Instructor Certification Program
updated (March 20, 2008)
Current Situation
In accordance with the new CSA Regulations all current instructors across the country are required to be retrained under the new teaching guidelines of the Canadian Soccer Association. At the moment there is only one trainer in Ontario that can train instructors.
On January 12 & 13, 2008 the OSA is hosting a 2 day Instructor Training course for a selected group of current National and Provincial instructors. These 12 instructors will go through the course in hopes to becoming a certified instructor by the CSA as well as a certified instructor trainer. At this point the OSA does not know how many trainers will be at our disposal therefore plans to host additional instructor training courses is on hold until such time that we know who our trainers are.
Moving forward
The OSA's plan is to have all the instructors on the current list attend a training course by the end of 2008. In addition to attending the course every instructor will have to be evaluated at a course they are instructing in order to become a certified instructor. The number of required evaluations will depend on the type of course attended and offered by the OSA. Once the OSA knows who is certified as instructor trainers, courses will be set up and invitations will be sent to each instructor on the current instructor list. Once these courses are completed only those instructors who attended the course and evaluated will be certified and able to teach OSA courses. Those who do not attend will be removed from the list of instructors and will lose their status as an OSA instructor.
Every instructor on the current list of instructors will be reclassified upon completion of the training course and the evaluation(s) done on the instructors.
The focus of the OSA is to first re-train current instructors and courses for new brand instructors will be hosted until 2009. All new instructors will have to start at the District Level.
Levels of Instructors and Promotion Criteria
- District Instructors: Instructors who have attended the Basic Instructor Course and satisfied the Provincial Association that they have demonstrated the ability to instruct the Entry Level Course to the standard determined by The Canadian Soccer Association. District Instructors are eligible to instruct at In-service training courses for referees up to and including District Referees.
- Provincial Instructors: Instructors who have completed a minimum of 2 consecutive years as a District Instructor, attended In-service training, and whose Instructional ability, having been evaluated by the Provincial Association, meet the standard as determined by The Canadian Soccer Association. Provincial Instructors are eligible to instruct at In-service training courses for referees up to and including Provincial Referees.
- National Instructors: Instructors who satisfy the criteria established by The Canadian Soccer Association from time to time, following nomination by a Provincial Association, and those Instructors who satisfy the criteria as determined by The Canadian Soccer Association, with outstanding ability to instruct at In-service training courses and events for referees up to and including National List Officials.
Recertification of Instructors
Recertification of instructors will happen every two years and will be based on the following:
- Instructors having instructed a minimum of 4 courses at the accredited level (within two years);
- Attendance at the bi-annual in-service training;
- An evaluation of instruction by The Canadian Soccer Association or Provincial Association to the standard determined by The Canadian Soccer Association.
For the 2008 season while the new certification program is being implemented, the current instructor list is current and we will stay status quo
