OSA Instructor Certification Program
updated (November 20, 2008)
Current Situation
In accordance with the new CSA Regulations all current instructors across the country are required to be retrained under the new teaching guidelines of the Canadian Soccer Association. At the moment there is only one trainer in Ontario that can train instructors.
On January 12 & 13, 2008 the OSA hosted a 2 day Instructor Training course for a selected group of current National and Provincial instructors, (10 instructors). From this course 5 of our top instructors were certified as Instructor Trainers and 5 were certified as Instructor Evaluators.
Over the past two months the OSA then recertified 73 District and Provincial instructors in the province. Out of the 106 instructors on the OSA List of Current Instructors in 2008 38 did not attend a re-certification course. Some will not be returning to instructor and others will be going to new courses in 2009.
Since they courses, all the instructors that took the recertification courses in the fall have been notified what instructor certification level they hold going into 2009 and if they require to receive an additional evaluation while teaching a course to get certified as an instructor. Those who do not require an evaluation are certified now. All instructors with their certification level will be sent to the CSA once all the instructors are certified.
Moving forward
A call for applications for new instructors was posted on the OSA's website on November 20, 2008. In February and March 2009 the OSA will be hosting a number of instructor training courses for new instructors. For more information on these courses and how to apply please follow this link.
All new instructors that are trained in 2009 will start as District Instructors.
Levels of Instructors and Promotion Criteria
- District Instructors: Instructors who have attended the Basic Instructor Course and satisfied the Provincial Association that they have demonstrated the ability to instruct the Entry Level Course to the standard determined by The Canadian Soccer Association. District Instructors are eligible to instruct at In-service training courses for referees up to and including District Referees.
- Provincial Instructors: Instructors who have completed a minimum of 2 consecutive years as a District Instructor, attended In-service training, and whose Instructional ability, having been evaluated by the Provincial Association, meet the standard as determined by The Canadian Soccer Association. Provincial Instructors are eligible to instruct at In-service training courses for referees up to and including Provincial Referees.
- National Instructors: Instructors who satisfy the criteria established by The Canadian Soccer Association from time to time, following nomination by a Provincial Association, and those Instructors who satisfy the criteria as determined by The Canadian Soccer Association, with outstanding ability to instruct at In-service training courses and events for referees up to and including National List Officials.
Recertification of Instructors
Recertification of instructors will happen every two years and will be based on the following:
- Instructors having instructed a minimum of 4 courses at the accredited level (within two years);
- Attendance at the bi-annual in-service training as invited by the Ontario Soccer Association
- An evaluation of instruction by The Canadian Soccer Association or Provincial Association to the standard determined by The Canadian Soccer Association.
