Doug Greig Inducted as a Player Inducted in 2002 | Born: Vancouver, B.C., March 16, 1928. Clubs: Vancouver St. Andrews, Vancouver Firefighters (1961), Vancouver North Shore (1954). Inside forward or half back. Played four times for Canada's national team at a time when Canada played few internationals. He was a perennial selection (19 times) for the B.C. All Stars, captaining the team nine times and was named coach of the team three times. At age 18 he was awarded rookie honours as "Best juvenile to graduate into senior soccer" and in his final year as a player was the 1963 Pacific Coast Soccer League's MVP. He was admired as a supreme ball control artist with a sudden electric shot and one of the best two-footers in the game in his day. Considered by many at the time to be Canada's best player and in a class of his own. Rejected several offers of tryouts with English clubs in favor of remaining and playing in Canada. |
